It is a fair question to ask, if the purpose is to figure out what should have been done by a reasonable person to prepare for disasters that we know will happen.

Should we cut costs and hope we are out of office when the inevitable happens.

Nassim Taleb discussed this in looking at the way bankers handle risk in his 2006 book, The Black Swan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory

Richard Feynman discussed this in his appendix to the Report of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident - Volume 2: Appendix F - Personal Observations on Reliability of Shuttle.

http://history.nasa.gov/rogersrep/v2appf.htm

We have also found that certification criteria used in Flight Readiness Reviews often develop a gradually decreasing strictness. The argument that the same risk was flown before without failure is often accepted as an argument for the safety of accepting it again. Because of this, obvious weaknesses are accepted again and again, sometimes without a sufficiently serious attempt to remedy them, or to delay a flight because of their continued presence.

After all of that, the important point to make is - In evaluating the culpability of the medics, it should not matter if everyone in management behaved heroically or if they behaved criminally, during the storm. After the storm, management should not have engaged in misleading accusations.

Public Safety/Disaster Preparedness/Risk Management all are poorly understood. When problems inevitably happen, the lessons learned are rarely the right ones.

First, thanks for continuing to cover this issue. Second, I thought I read somewhere that Michael Huss was at this party, but of course I can't find the reference now. If politics down there is anything like what I'm used to up here, there were a number of high ranking city officials at the Mayor's birthday party. Believe me, someone makes note of who shows up for these things and there are ramifications later on.

Thank you for your good work on this issue. Having been in EMS for almost as long as you've been an attorney, I've seen employees sacrificed on the alter of political expediency too many times.

Huss appears to not only be taking the easy way out, he's attempting to further his agenda along the way.

Rogue Medic is also keeping on top of this issue. Would that the "real" media was being a diligent as are you two.

I am glad someone is standing up and defending due process. people are growing tired of sifting for facts and are looking for easy answers; convenient pre-packaged and disposable opinions abound. People are forgetting. On behalf of the accused (and otherwise undefended Medics), as well as the accused Officers, thank you.

Chad,

Yes, the time from the 911 call to cancellation was a long time in each case.

There is a lot of important information that has not been released includes the times from the 911 calls to the dispatch of the ambulances.

I wrote about this at length in my post with the same title as the follow-up post by Pittsburgh Legal Back Talk - The Need for Evidence Before Assessing Guilt.

I apologize for a lack of imagination in the title.
