Where Did the Century Go?
No. 577 Duquesne University Law School is celebrating its centennial this year. Its enormous contribution to our region cannot be overstated. CLT
Lost Weekend.
No. 576 How can I write about law when everybody in town is totally distracted by football? And why not? Its February and distractions are welcome. If the Steelers win (sorry, when the Steelers win) and the euphoria extends for a another week or two, we may all wake up to springtime, just as Punxytawney […]
The Daily.
No. 575 If you have an iPad, you’ve probably looked at The Daily. As the name suggests, it is a daily publication, more like a magazine than a newspaper, produced for the iPad. It is a bit like Time, Life and Sports Illustrated wrapped up in an electronic media format. Very slick, fabulous photography, lots […]
Dumb Pizza, Smart Pizza
No. 574 The movable letterboard in front of a Pizza Hut Takeout that I pass fairly often has had the same message posted for months: “New Prices Coming Soon.” Every time I pass it, I have the same two thoughts. (1) Are the new prices lower? Probably, or they wouldn’t advertise it. (2) I think […]
Heroes are made in the moment.
Amid the appalling story of the attempted assassination of Congresswomen Giffords, it is worth noting that several heroes stepped forward from the bystanders and probably were responsible for saving lives.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
No. 562 “You’re simpletons; you’re idiots if you don’t get that!” These immortal words were spoken by the Governor of Pennsylvania to Leslie Stahl on 60 Minutes on Sunday night, on the subject of whether slots are on balance a plus for the state because gambling addicts would have just spent their paychecks in New […]
Wikileaks on Twitter.
No. 559 I learned just now that you can follow Wikileaks on Twitter. Not that you’d want to. CLT
Baby Boomers and Retirement Age.
The first of the Baby Boomers, my generation, are beginning to turn 65 in 2011. Among the early ones, Chief Judge Donetta Ambrose of the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, elected Senior Judge status on her 65th birthday this past November. Being a Senior Judge is not exactly retirement — its probably better. Someone else must squeeze an administrative load into a busy trial schedule. The stress level drops like a rock. Meanwhile, the judicial system and the country are big winners. All of that experience and knowledge is a valuable resource — too valuable to waste. And as more BB’ers pass the retirement threshold, this should be a model for post-retirement employment of seniors in every field.
Rendell: “A Nation of Wussies”! Quick, Call Bartlett’s.
Excuse me, Governor, it seems to us that some other officials, not you, exercised leadership in keeping vehicles off the highways while road crews cleared the in-hindsight less than a blizzard snowfall.
Great name for a team, though: the Philadelphia Wussies.
